Christopher Bell's Hunt for His First NASCAR Title: A Story of Near Misses and High Hopes
NASCAR competitors often hold onto the memories of their triumphs, but equally unforgettable are the races where victory slipped just beyond their grasp. Christopher Bell knows this all too well, especially from his recent experiences at Las Vegas Motor Speedway — a venue where the finish line has brought both promise and heartbreak.
In the last two playoff events at Las Vegas, Bell finished as the runner-up, each time painfully close to winning. These near misses have built anticipation around his next chance to claim a win on the iconic 1½-mile track when the NASCAR Cup Series returns for the South Point 400, kicking off the critical Round of 8 in the playoffs.
The excitement will ramp up starting at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with Cup Series practice, followed by qualifying at 2:40 p.m. Later that day, fans can catch the Xfinity Series Focused Health 302 playoff race at 4:30 p.m. Then, the main event green flag drops at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, setting the stage for what could be a defining moment in Bell's season.
As one of the final eight drivers still in contention for the NASCAR Cup Series championship, Bell, hailing from Norman, Oklahoma, sits fifth in the playoff points, just four points shy of securing a spot in the top four. Victory at Las Vegas—or in either of the remaining two races in this Round of 8—would instantly punch Bell's ticket to the Championship 4, slated for November 2 in Phoenix.
"Winning here at Las Vegas means everything," Bell says with conviction. "It’s a pivotal race. Secure a win, lock in your Championship 4 spot early, and that gives you three full weeks to strategize and fine-tune for Phoenix. That kind of preparation time is a massive edge."
The Agonizing Runner-Up Finishes
Bell secured pole position in both recent South Point 400 races, signaling strong showings from the get-go. In 2023, he mounted an impressive late rally but narrowly missed out, falling short to Kyle Larson in a nail-biting finish. Yet, Bell bounced back immediately, winning at Homestead-Miami and advancing to the Championship 4.
The following year, Bell showed dominance by winning the pole again and leading a race-high 155 laps, only to be denied victory by Joey Logano, who masterfully conserved fuel to hold on for the win during nearly the last 70 laps. Unfortunately, despite this near-win, a 22nd-place finish at Martinsville dashed Bell’s hopes of reaching the Championship 4 in 2024. Logano, however, capitalized on that momentum to win his third Cup Series title in Phoenix.
Reflecting on last season, Bell admits, "We came into the playoffs as one of the favorites, maybe even THE favorite. But it was a reminder that nothing is guaranteed—being favored doesn’t win you anything on race day. Every driver has an opportunity as long as they fight for it."
This perspective has only strengthened Bell’s resolve as he approaches the current playoffs.
A Season of Ups and Downs, But Building Momentum
Bell showed flashes of brilliance earlier in the season by winning three races in a row at Atlanta, Circuit of the Americas, and Phoenix. These victories were his sole wins in the regular season, indicating both the potential and the struggle to maintain peak performance consistently.
"While we haven’t been dominating every race this year," Bell explains, "we’ve managed to finish strong and lead key laps. It’s been frustrating at times, but those solid finishes prove we have what it takes to compete at the top level."
Since the playoffs began, Bell’s form has markedly improved. After securing a win in the Round of 16 finale at Bristol, he has impressively managed five consecutive top-10 finishes, including a third-place result on the similar 1½-mile Kansas Speedway just recently. Such consistent performance fuels his confidence heading into Las Vegas.
"Right now, I feel more prepared and confident than ever," Bell shares. "When the 2025 schedule was announced, we immediately knew this could be our year. The tracks line up perfectly for our strengths, and Phoenix—the championship race—is my best track on the calendar. We recognize this is the best chance we've had to claim the Cup title."
