Stay Alert: Kanlaon Volcano’s Potential Lahar Threat
In a recent advisory, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has urged residents near Kanlaon Volcano to prepare for a possible lahar flow, a concerning development that could impact the region.
Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol, citing the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s report, warned that Typhoon Tino’s intense rainfall could trigger volcanic sediment flows or lahar. This phenomenon, often associated with active volcanoes, poses a unique challenge to the communities living near Kanlaon.
“The heavy rainfall expected in the coming days could lead to lahar, especially in areas with loose volcanic material,” Bacolcol explained. “This includes the current Alert Level 2 Kanlaon Volcano, where intense rainfall can erode ash and pyroclastic deposits, creating muddy stream flows.”
